Workshop Update: 30’ Solar Electric Launch

Solar Expedition Boat for Down Under - Doug Hylan

This month has seen exciting progress on our latest build – a 30’ solar electric cruiser designed by US-based Doug Hylan. The hull is constructed from Western Red Cedar planking paired with ATL Composites’ Kinetix resins and WEST System epoxy and fillers. This method results in a light yet strong hull. Tasmanian Celery Top Pine has been used for all structural elements for its excellent durability and structural integrity.

As we have found with previous projects, blending modern CAD technology and CNC jig cutting delivers a very fair hull, and this one is no exception. With the planking complete and the outer fibreglass skins applied, the boat is now ready for final fairing/undercoating before she is turned upright for the fit out.

We’re really looking forward to seeing this project develop over the next few months.
